Champions League – Back to Historical 4-3-3 OL: why it makes sense for Fournier – Eurosport.fr

Hubert Fournier has an idea to revive Olympique Lyon: abandon a 4-4-2 immutable diamond for almost two years to return to a historic 4-3-3, on Tuesday against Zenit St. Petersburg Champions League. Those who still ask this question have probably seen or OL-Valencia (0-1), or Monaco-OL (1-1). During these two shocks, Lyon has existed only after changing system. Already in trouble with teams lining up five defenders (1-2 against Rennes, 0-0 against Lille, 1-1 in Gent), the 4-4-2 diamond Lyon was also opposed by four defenses of Valencia and Monaco.

Installed by Remi Garde in December 2013, after a series of twelve games that saw Lyon win once, this scheme had revolutionized the game of a team who played 4-3-3 since the mid-2000s and Paul Le Guen years. This tactic had helped to improve the development of Alexandre Lacazette, while magnifying the qualities against attackers-side of the time (Bedimo and Miguel Lopes). This had allowed Lyon to recover the head upright.

A new system to help recruits

Two years later, the situation was reversed. OL hardly wins, with just two wins from eight Nabil Fekir injury. Result of a disastrous offensive efficiency: seven goals scored, four after set-pieces in the last eight games. Hubert Fournier had to react. His coaching Monaco (output Darder and Beauvue for Ferri and Ghezzal, move to 4-3-3) should find an extension on the lawn of Zenit St. Petersburg.

First of course, to find the way to victory before a meeting that the president Aulas has specifically asked his players to win. The return to the 4-3-3 also aims to promote the expression of recruits: Valbuena never really weighed since he was in Lyon at the high point of the diamond. Darder seeks its place as much as his physical condition and Beauvue spends his matches to run in a vacuum.

This does not mean that these three men will retain their place in the team. For Hubert Fournier was sentenced to Monaco as his system his animation of the first period. A force to go well in the matches since his replacement, Jordan Ferri won the right to regain its place in the middle. And Rachid Ghezzal is perhaps the only player truly capable of holding a corridor in the current workforce Gones.

Lacazette is in he will accommodate?

But even replacements Beauvue Darder and have their say during the meetings and everything indicates that they should more easily find opportunities to do so in a system they control. A pattern that also perfectly suited to Mathieu Valbuena, as he asked him not to stick the sideline and had the freedom to move across the width of the field in the offensive zone.

While obviously depend on the results. If the OL starts to score goals and win, it seems highly unlikely that Hubert Fournier return quickly to 4-4-2 diamond. Nevertheless, it is this system that best suits the offensive leader of the team, Alexandre Lacazette. Remains to be seen if he will not change his views if he starts to score goals at the forefront of a 4-3-3?
