Fifa. Blatter resigns, a new president in a few months – Ouest-France

The storm ended up because of the unsinkable Joseph Blatter the FIFA president said Tuesday that he renounced the presidency of the body, shaken by a series of corruption scandals and which should have a new boss by March 2016.

Mr. Blatter, 79, in office since 1998 and yet reelected Friday for a fifth term, said he would call an extraordinary congress at which his successor will be appointed.

Over the years and business, the Swiss often spun metaphor captain who does not abandon his ship, regardless of the violence of contrary elements. But this time it was too much.

“Even if a new mandate was entrusted to me, it seems that I am not supported by all in the world of football, which is why I will convene an extraordinary congress and return my term provision “, said the Valais, at the headquarters of FIFA, in Zurich.

“I will continue to perform my duties until then, and I am now free from the constraints of an election. I will focus to engage ambitious reforms “. FIFA made “face challenges which do not stop and needs a profound restructuring” said Mr. Blatter.

“It was a difficult decision, a courageous decision and the right decision” , has quickly responded Michel Platini, UEFA president and declared enemy of Blatter.

Valcke blamed

“The next FIFA Ordinary Congress was scheduled on May 13 (2016) in Mexico. Wait that long would only postpone problems and this is why I asked them to organize a special Congress’ , has he further explained.

Domenico Scala, the chairman of the audit and compliance committee of FIFA, then announced that the extraordinary congress would be held between December 2015 and March 2016.

Neither Blatter nor Scala did not answer any questions. The press conference lasted just under a quarter of an hour and Blatter immediately left the room after a handshake with Mr. Scala.

This resignation came just hours after new New York Times charges this time targeting the French Jérôme Valcke, General Secretary of FIFA and Blatter’s right hand. The US daily accused Mr Valcke to be the head of a transfer of $ 10 million in accounts managed by former vice-president Jack Warner organization, accused by the US justice in a scandal corruption.

In a statement Tuesday, FIFA tried to deflate the accusations by saying that Mr Valcke was in no way involved in the transfer and that it was only a draft assistance to the African Diaspora in the Caribbean on behalf of South Africa.

But the last replica of Wednesday’s earthquake was therefore most terrible. That day, it all began about six in the morning when Swiss police operating at the request of US authorities showed up at the Zurich hotel where were housed the main leaders of FIFA, to challenge seven of between them.

What about Platini?

The action, which occurred two days before the presidential election to FIFA, was orchestrated by the US justice investigating acts of corruption dating back almost 25 years. In the end, nine elected Fifa and five global body of football partners have been charged.

The same day, the offices of FIFA were searched, this time as part of a separate criminal procedure on suspicion “unfair management of money laundering and” surrounding the powers of World Cups 2018 and 2022 to Russia and Qatar.

But Blatter was left standing. Better, he was re-elected Friday just forced a second round of his only challenger, Jordanian Prince Ali Bin Hussein, who announced his retirement before the second round. The latter has already announced that he would again candidate.

“I’m in a good mood, it’s normal, I was a bit nervous before the Congress” , had commented Blatter, who also had cash calls to resignation of Michel Platini, former ally turned enemy, and whose name will inevitably resurface as a possible future president.

Blatter was joined FIFA in 1975 as director of development programs and directing since 1998. He’s been through so crises, the powers of the scandal Mastercard Worldwide from 2018 to 2022 through the case ISL, many thought indestructible. A wrong.
