Bardet, alone in the lead in the last 22 kilometers of the stage, preceded by 36 seconds, which Van Garderen took second place ahead of Briton Chris Froome. The American Tejay van Garderen (BMC) has donned the yellow jersey after this first day in the mountains, an exact replica of the stage to be proposed next month in the Tour de France.

Romain Bardet , 24, has taken its first success of the season. Bodes well before the Tour de France he finished last year in sixth place.

After the initial breakaway (Wellens, Sicard and Serry for last survivors), Bardet attacked near the top of Col d’Allos (2250 m), the highest point of this edition, and has widened the gap on the descent. He then presented at the foot of the final climb, 6 km from the finish with a lead of 1 min 25 sec. Froome has started in the last two kilometers, but was then taken by van Garderen.

The winner of the Tour de France, Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali was dropped in the final ascent, as the Spaniard Alejandro Valverde.

In the overall standings, Van Garderen has 18 seconds on the Spaniard Benat Intxausti Bardet and 20 seconds.

Friday, 183 kilometers are scheduled between Saint-Bonnet-en-Champsaur (Hautes-Alpes), and Villard-de-Lans (Isère). The race will take the Rousset pass to reach the heights of the Vercors.
