A former world champion killed – BBC Sport

The former world champion Mexican Boxing Juan José Estrada, aged! 51, died Sunday in Tijuana, northern Mexico, after being stabbed during a domestic dispute, authorities said Monday. Estrada, nicknamed “Dynamite”, had won the title of WBC world champion in 1987 and the WBA title in 1988 in the super bantamweight category. According to sources close to the investigation, Estrada was taken to a pharmacy Sunday morning victim of a wound with a knife, but died before help arrived. “There would have been a fight at home with relatives who allegedly injured, probably with a knife” , said an investigator with the AFP . No arrest has however taken place at the moment, according to José Manuel Yepiz, spokesman for the prosecutor. After leaving boxing, Estrada had been in trouble with the law and had been imprisoned in a 2005 drug case. He is now working as a garbage collector at the University of Baja California.
