Transfers to Minors: Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid banned recruitment for one year – The World

The two main clubs from Madrid, Real and Atlético were banned recruitment for one year for violating the rules on the transfer of underage players as FC Barcelona before them, said, Thursday, January 14, FIFA.

This prohibition applies to both mercatos come, that of summer 2016 and that of January 2017. Both Clubs can, however, make purchases and disposals of players in January 2016. Atlético additionally fined 900 000 Swiss francs (821,000 euros) and the Real to a fine of 360,000 Swiss francs (328,000 euros)

Earlier sanction?

The ban resulted from the participation of minor players in competitions on behalf of Atlético (between 2007 and 2014) and Real (between 2005 and 2014). FIFA prohibits clubs recruiting players foreign minors (limit lowered to 16 years for Europeans), except to fulfill certain conditions.

In January 2015, FIFA had reported a request for “information” with Real Madrid for all foreign players under 18 years of the club. Real had then issued a series of data, ensuring “strictly follow the registration law [players] in all cases” .

By spring 2015, the Real had nonetheless struggled to recruit players for the future, an attitude that could then be interpreted as a desire to anticipate a possible punishment: Recruitment forward Marco Asensio (19 years) Norwegian prodigy Martin Odegaard (16 years), the Brazilian Lucas Silva medium (22 years old, on loan in Marseille) or the Brazilian defender Porto Danilo (23 years).

Barça already sanctioned

Such a prohibition on recruiting for a year, confirmed ultimately by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), was applied for the first time so resoundingly at Barca.

Entry into force in January 2015, it had forced the Catalan club to anticipate many transfers from the summer of 2014, including those of the Uruguayan Luis Suarez, the Croatian Ivan Rakitic, the German Andre Ter Stegen Marc or the Chilean Claudio Bravo. Last summer, Barça had secured the services of two players, the Turkish middle Arda Turan (Atlético) and lateral Aleix Vidal (Seville), who had to wait until January to compete in their first game under the colors Barça.

The two Madrid clubs may appeal the decision of the FIFA then hope that the appeal lodged before the CAS is suspensive, as it happened for Barca.
