Lotus Renault buys and returns to Formula 1 – The World

Even if it supplied engines to Red Bull Racing, the French brand had retired from F1 as stable in itself.

Renault through the voice of its CEO Carlos Ghosn, ended in extremis to a long suspense and hard negotiations formalizing Thursday, December 3 his return to Formula 1, via the acquisition of the Lotus team.

The French manufacturer has been back at the high level by buying the team he had sold, between 2009 and 2010, to Genii Capital, a Luxembourg investment fund, when the brand wanted to take a step back to F1.

Renault was to determine before next Monday, when the next hearing set by a court in London on the future of Lotus.

The French brand won between 2010 and 2013, four constructors titles and four titles when drivers supplied engines to Red Bull Racing from the German Sebastian Vettel.

Renault would no longer be a simple engine

But Renault had considered not draw enough profit from this partnership, and its CEO no longer concealed, for several months, he wanted to stop being single engine.

“By again becoming a stable full, Renault can take full advantage of his victories. The engine positioning made sense but it has limitations. The return on image and investment, made necessary by the new engine regulations, was low “, Ghosn says in the press release of the Renault group.

Present in F1 almost continuously since 1977, as stable on its own or as single engine supplier, Renault was notably F1 world champion in 2005 and 2006 with Spaniard Fernando Alonso as the Renault F1.

His ambitions will necessarily be lower next year for a season of transition, with an average driver, the Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado, and a beginner, the Briton Jolyon Palmer (24 years), against the two giants of modern F1, Mercedes and Ferrari.

“Our ambition is to win, although reasonably, it will take time” , has said Mr. Ghosn in a statement.
