Van der Wiel, the weak link – Sports.fr

Awkward against Monaco (0-0), Gregory Van der Wiel has been the most disappointing Parisien Principality Sunday night. The weak Dutch performance could lead Laurent Blanc to shift again Marquinhos on the right side of his defense.

This is a paradox. PSG almost in front of goal on the lawn of Monaco (0-0) Sunday night, but it is one of his defenders, Gregory Van der Wiel, who made the most disappointing performance of the eleven selected by holders Laurent Blanc. Faced with Monegasque shy, lateral Dutch law has not suffered too much in his duel with Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco. But it is in his offensive contribution that former Ajax player proved largely insufficient, awkward in his attempts.

The statistics come from elsewhere confirm the low delivery “VDW” . Van der Wiel is the Parisian defender touched the least balls (54), but it is still he who has lost the most (20). For comparison, the very clean Maxwell hit 81 times leather, and has lost only 11 times. Among the defenders, including Monaco, Van der Wiel is also the one who had the least success in his passes 77%, against 89% in Maxwell or Layvin Kurzawa for example. Only almamy Touré, all young right side of the ASM, was also “bad” (77%) before its release at the time of the game. But it operates on a team that has less pains to keep the ball PSG.

In his defense, Van der Wiel had quite a few people who combine. PSG has largely focused on the left, where Edinson Cavani went again to walk, despite its axial starting position, where Blaise Matuidi projects further forward than its counterpart, Marco Verratti. As for Ezequiel Lavezzi, supposed to line the right flank, he often region-free to occupy the whole front of the attack. But Van der Wiel, the few times he had the space before him, he sinned by his poor choices or technical deficiencies. And this unbalanced PSG might have been even more dangerous going obstruct the side Monaco left where Kurzawa spent a fairly quiet evening.

When it is also very useful offensively, Van der Wiel, which does has never been a defense of serenity, is clearly the weak link of the GMP. The problem is that Laurent Blanc has lot of alternatives to the Dutch. Serge Aurier recruited to compete in Toulouse, was wounded. The only option would be to shift and again Marquinhos on the right flank. Which would be a shame, given the excellent Brazilian performance in line alongside Thiago Silva, and to the extent that David Luiz, in a different register from that of Thiago Motta, brings physical density in midfield. But as can be seen the return match against Chelsea, where the right side Paris will direct opponent a certain Eden Hazard, the risk would be great for White to maintain confidence in Van der Wiel …
