Monfils played with fire but did not burn – Eurosport.fr

Five sets and a win in pain: Gael Monfils tournament starts. Few Roland Garros editions where the French has not fought in this way to overcome an obstacle. This year it happened in the second round to a young Argentine who gave him more than a headache than expected: Diego Schwartzman, 62nd World and passion to spare. 3 hours necessary to eliminate (4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3) are proof. In the next round, another player still tougher awaits: the Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas, serious candidate like him to eventually face Roger Federer in the second round.

This Monfils – Schwartzman felt the extension to match several kilometers around. Rightly. Monfils struggled to master this player forehand as powerful as his backhand. By undergoing the baseline too involved, the French ended up losing the first set. His response, however, did not expect: more stingy with unforced errors and less winning shots (8/17), the 14th World quickly recovered in the second inning of plumb … before diving back into the third act.

With two missed opportunities to break Monfils left Schwartzman take the reins of the match, Argentina converting his only break opportunity of the set. Without getting carried away by the script, the French had no choice but to start the attack to impose its power in the fourth inning. With 16 winning shots to 3 (for the same number of unforced errors, 5), Gael showed that he was still in the game, much to the delight of the public center court.

Roland Garros: Times strong Monfils – Schwartzman – Eurosport

The fifth round did not lie. With the first ball cannon Service (77% success throughout the game) and made a break in the sixth game, he finished this part of running in his favor after almost three hours of combat. In the experiment, the mental, physical, Monfils went for a success that brings a little more than Roger Federer. Provided to confirm the next round against Pablo Cuevas, 23rd World, which will undoubtedly also tough guy.
