Formula 1 ex-driver Jean-Pierre Beltoise died – Europe1

The French motorsport Monday lost one of its figures with the disappearance of the former F1 driver Jean-Pierre Beltoise dead in Dakar, Senegal, at the age of 77 years . “Following a stroke on December 31 and the morning of a brain hemorrhage on January 2 dipping in a coma, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, hospitalized in Dakar for 6 days, died this Monday, January 5,” his family said in a statement .

85 F1 Grand Prix played between 1966 and 1974, the French pilot had managed to win only one victory, but not just any. Jean-Pierre Beltoise, current then for the British team BRM, had indeed won the Monaco Grand Prix, the most prestigious race on the calendar in 1972 in a downpour. Besides this victory in the Principality Beltoise also signed seven podiums in F1, three second places, the Netherlands, France and South Africa.

This unique success came one year after a terrible accident in which Jean-Pierre Beltoise was involved during the endurance test of the 1,000 kilometers from Buenos Aires. As he drove his car down the track, it was struck hard by the Italian driver Ignazio Giunti, died instantly. A time threatened by the Argentine justice after the accident and sanctioned by the French Federation, Jean-Pierre Beltoise continued his career between F1 and endurance until 1974 before rubbing with other disciplines such as Super Touring or rallycross.

Step outside of the charts, the name of Beltoise refers to a golden age of French motorsport. The pilot was born in Boulogne-Billancourt and participated in the great adventure of Matra French brand in F1. He was also the brother-François Cevert, icon of the tricolor F1, death race in 1973 driving a Tyrrell.
