“A pickaxe blow in a rock which contained a treasure.” Thus our consultant Guy Roux described the decision of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez appointed coach of the first team Zinedine Zidane, a novice at this position. But, and this is perhaps even more important than his lack of experience as a head coach, “Zizou” is not a novice at Real. Not at all the same. He knows all the corners of the “casa blanca” for having been player (2002-2006) and adviser to the president, assistant coach coach Carlo Ancelotti, the year of the “decimated” in 2013-14, and then coach of the reserve since.

“The name and lived Zidane allow it to be a high level input manager because he will listen to the players,” said Raymond Domenech . “If he does not make big miscommunication with his team, he will have some results because at this level of quality, it will always be results, no matter what. If he had started with tours or Valenciennes it would have been more complicated … “However, the challenge ahead is to” ZZ “is large and must for that three key challenges.

Switch on course the first half of the season. Given his knowledge of the Real, but also the state of the workforce he recovers, a rare quality but also somewhat bewildered by management that Rafael Benitez has made, Zidane has all the keys for a successful enthronement. “He has a great knowledge of football, he has total respect for all the people around him, with all the club and all the people of Spain and perhaps even those of Barcelona,” notes Guy Roux, one of the luminaries of the tricolor bench. “It can succeed. This little book, so speaks little. And so he never says of stupidity.”

Zidane is not otherwise than the others, and it probably will benefit from a ” effect “rebound after his appointment, especially as Real calendar spare him serious testing until the end of February and the reception of the current leader of Liga, Atlético’s neighbor. The few glitches that annoyed as his predecessor should even apologize to him. But for how long ? “The first six months it will be quiet. It’s more for after I’m worried,” said Domenech, who notes the difficulty to prevail over time at a big club. Zidane Hardly was he appointed a former leader of the Real, Ramon Calderon also reminded Monday that a certain Jose Mourinho was now on the market …

Manage his impulsivity . Calderon’s statements on the BBC are just a foretaste of what awaits Zidane daily. At Real, he will undergo tremendous pressure. That said, “Zizou”, the pressure, he knows. But when you are a coach of one of the most powerful clubs in the world, this pressure has nevertheless a very different flavor. And he will have to definitely take on it …

“It was the only weak point of his career, his ability to fart shot time to time,” easily recognized Raymond Domenech, who was coach of the Blues during the famous headbutt firmly told to Marco Materazzi in the World 2006. “He finished his playing career on a whim final World Cup, where he snapped. He was not able to resist to excessive emotion for him. And when you’re a coach, you are confronted with this situation. We can not do anything on the ground, it is frustrated all the time, we live through others, who are on the ground and sometimes it does not go as we want. In such times, one must be able to stand back, be able to understand that the other is not necessarily able to do what we could want it to do and be able to keep his cool. ” We will not hide that we are quite excited to see Zidane at work on his bench during a big match Real. Far, far away from the reserve matches …

Digesting this first experience. By choosing to take the plunge on the Real bench (he had a concrete offer Bordeaux in the summer of 2014, he refused), Zidane did not choose the easy. First because one always expects much of a genius of his caliber. Before him, two former major No. 10 have suffered during their first experience on a bench (admittedly as coach of a national team): Michel Platini and Diego Maradona. The first ended in a missed Euro (in 1992), the second on a humiliation against Germany (2010 World Cup). The career path of another giant of soccer, Marco van Basten, coach of the Netherlands between 2004 and 2008 before returning as an assistant in 2015, does little more than dream.

No, the model certainly intends to follow Zidane at Real is rather to be sought in the … Barça. There Johan Cruyff obviously invented a new style of play, but Josep Guardiola also passed by the reserve team for a year, or Luis Enrique, all players become references club as coach under the same coat of arms. But none of the three had recovered a team during the season, which never helps.
